Routes, Stops and Maps — Navigate the HOHO Network

San Francisco HOHO services typically run two or three distinct loops. Knowing the loops helps you avoid backtracking.

Typical loops you'll find

  1. Downtown / Union Square Loop — Great for shopping and transit connections. Stop: Union Square.
  2. Waterfront / Fisherman's Wharf Loop (Powell–Mason or Powell–Hyde) — Best for pier attractions, sea lions and the carousel.
  3. Golden Gate / Presidio Loop — Scenic; includes viewpoints that cross or approach Golden Gate Bridge.
  4. Sausalito Extension — Some tickets include or allow upgrades to a ferry/Sausalito connector.

Top stops and what to do there

  • Fisherman's Wharf / Pier 39: Seals, carousel, seafood restaurants.
  • Alcatraz Cruises Pier (Embarcadero): Buy combined combo if you plan to visit the island.
  • Golden Gate viewpoint (Battery Spencer/Marin Headlands access on some tours): Sunset photos and skyline panoramas.
  • Union Square: Shopping and transit to cable cars.
  • Lombard Street: The famous switchback — a short walk from the bus stop.

Printable micro-itinerary (4–5 hour loop)

  1. Board at Union Square 09:30 — ride to Fisherman's Wharf (arrive ≈10:00).
  2. Walk Pier 39, see the seals, quick coffee (60–90 minutes).
  3. Board next HOHO northbound for Golden Gate viewpoint (arrive ≈12:30).
  4. Photos & snacks (~45 mins).
  5. Return to Embarcadero for a late afternoon museum or cable car hop.

Pro tip

If you only have time for one HOHO ride, choose the waterfront loop — it covers the densest cluster of SF must-sees.
