Alcatraz + HOHO — The practical pairing

Alcatraz cruises depart from Pier 33 — close to the Embarcadero HOHO stops. Combining a hop-on hop-off pass with Alcatraz makes logistical sense, but timing is everything.

Do this first: Book your Alcatraz date/time before anything else — tickets sell out weeks ahead. Then choose a HOHO slot that gets you to Pier 33 at least 30 minutes before embark.

Timing example

• Alcatraz morning cruise at 10:30: Aim to arrive at Pier 33 by 10:00. If your HOHO loop runs every 20–30 minutes, leave a buffer of 2 loops.

Where to board HOHO for Alcatraz

• Best: Embarcadero / Ferry Building / Pier 39 stops — all put you within a 5–15 minute walk of Pier 33.

Tip: On busy summer days, allocate extra time for security lines and the short dock transfer.

After the island

Return to the Embarcadero stop to continue your HOHO route, or hop off at Fisherman’s Wharf for a meal and attractions.
